The literary space of northwest Bohemia as a place of encounters and contrasts

The northwest Bohemia is a special place which is in the cultural presentation shown as a contrast between the romantic landscape and the industry area inhabited with social excluded people. The literary texts of this region can be identified by common characteristics, that seems to be often he space depended, and which can be found in the Czech-speaking and German-speaking texts as well and so created a space, which these two nationalities included. This region can be seen as an example of a transcultural space in the contemporary Central Europe. The history of this place can determine and influence the narrative of the stories that are being told in the researched texts. In this context, the role of aspects such as multilingualism, the romanticised image of the former Sudetenland region as a foggy, deserted hilly landscape, and the symbolism of death should be considered. The project research is focused on texts established after year The purpose of this project is to explore the connection between a specific space and its history, which has an immediate impact on the literature texts.

 

Julie Adam

Julie Adam, M.A., was born in Ústí nad Labem in 1990. She studied Intercultural German Studies at the Jan Evangelista Purkyně University there. Her master’s degree completed she in German studies with a focus on literature at the University of Potsdam in Germany, which she completed with a master’s thesis on the German-language texts of Jaroslav Rudiš. She has been a doctoral student at the Faculty of Arts UJEP since September 2022. In her research, she focuses mainly on contemporary German-language authors of Czech origin, literary space of the former Sudetenland and the function of history in literature.
